Baby Shark verses Coronavirus

Baby shark or news on the Coronavirus, I’m not sure which I’ve played the most but I know which one I prefer!

This Baby Shark puppet activity got the whole family involved in a performance (see film coming soon) and has continued to entertain my 2 year old for weeks now.

More of a craft-based activity but no special skills required, I promise! It is easy to make, can be extended in different ways and allows the children to play independently whilst you work (that’s if you don’t mind having a break from the news and listening to Baby Shark on repeat).

How to do this activity

What you’ll need

  • coloured card or foam (yellow/baby, pink/mummy, blue/daddy, orange/grandma and green/grandpa)
  • googly eyes
  • lolly sticks
  • cellotape
  • white paper and pens
  • Baby Shark Song with actions if possible (we also like Baby Shark Remix!)

Instructions

  • Cut shark shapes out of different coloured card (I used foam hands and cut off the fingers I didn’t need for the fins).
  • Stick on the “googly” eyes with glue (draw them if you don’t have any).
  • Draw different teeth on white paper with red pen (remember, pointy teeth for baby, mummy, daddy sharks and non pointy for grandpa and grandma – this very important according to my daughter!)
  • Turn puppets over and stick lolly sticks to the back using cellotape (we didn’t need to buy these, we just had to eat a lolly each!)
  • Rehearse the actions of the Baby Shark Song by watching it lots of times on YouTube (independent time woo woo).
  • Set up a stage (behind the sofa will do if you haven’t got anything else).
  • Perform to an audience.
  • Enjoy! Hope you like ours.

Why do this activity?

4 year old enjoyed it because…

  • he got to watch alot of tele!
  • he liked being the DJ, controlling the music during the performance.
  • Mummy and Daddy spontaneously start dancing to it when we’re in the mood.

2 year old enjoyed it because…

  • she loves the Baby Shark Song, it’s her favourite thing at the minute (not my choice ;))
  • she has loved watching the actions and copying them. She has nearly mastered the whole song now and has had a real sense of achievement in it independently.

Mum says.

  • it looks crafty but its easy.
  • uses minimal resources, all of which can be found at home.
  • it got the whole family involved and we enjoyed performing to nanas and grandads on skype too which they loved.
  • you can ask Alexa to “play Baby Shark” when it’s most needed- when preparing meals and the children are at your feet asking for cereal – the children break into dance, distracting them for just enough time for you to get food on the table.
  • it’s a break from the news!
